Antoni Tàpies

The Catalan painter Antoni Tàpies has died.

I came across his work, in the Tate Gallery I think, soon after arriving in Britain in the late 1960s, and was smitten straight away. He painted textures rather than pictures, and his work seems like ancient desert landscapes gouged by some catastrophe. I think he was my favourite painter of the 20th century.

If you don’t know his work, do take the trouble to type his name into your favourite search engine. I don’t need to give a link, you will easily find material.
